I hope to go back next year and make this an annual ladies weekend.
For 7 New Yorkers to clear their schedules for a weekend at the same time is basically a miracle and WELL WELL worth it.

My pride and joy this Memorial Day weekend was making this top from my hand dyed Shibori fabric.

I realized my sewing machine can make buttonholes but that I do not have any buttons.
So here's my rickety cross stitch that help my top together all weekend.

And below are some detail photos of a raglan top I made, screen printed, and hand painted(with the help of my amazing beau at the time) junior year of college.

Getting Knitty with It.

Hey. So there is a blizzard outside and what better way to spend my week and a half stay-cation alone than knitting (rock climbing, quilting, apt hunting etc.)

About two weeks ago I decided to learn to knit mittens. I was all ready with my instructions and double pointed needles until my 3.5 inches of ribbing was done and then I was stuck.

Being stuck blows, so I had a thought.

I did a search on YOUTUBE and found some awesome instructional videos for knitting mittens. Click here.

Then in about a week I had an orphan mitten. See below.

But I really liked it.

So. Yea. I'm a maker of crafty things so for me to go to a craft fair I am definitely a snoot.

Yes, friends I'm a craft snoot. I won't even deny it.

I spent most of my Saturday waking hours at craft fair in Williamsburg(see the invite below) and at the Holiday Craft Fair at Third Ward in Bushwick.

I must say I am a fan of some of the exhibitors at the Williamsburg fair(it was more like a pop up store in a store front for the weekend which was nice) I read some of those ladies blogs pretty often so it was nice seeing some of the work in person though I didn't end up seeing anything I couldn't live without.

Third Ward was OK.

Much bigger than when I participated as a vendor two years ago so that was exciting. Though I wasn't impressed with most of the very DIY-y goods. I did commit to a card by little bunny cards for my older brothers birthday. I like that she has shark themed cards. Not sure why maybe because it's not cute animals like on all the other cards I've seen in the handmade market.

Sometimes I hate living in NYC.

This week I was reminded why it's not so bad in fact it can be totally awesome.

First of all a few things. I got a bike. I got myself a hipster kickball team (LOVES it). I found myself included in a group that is going to start watching documentaries. And if you know me I do enjoy myself some god docs.

And to top off the week I saw Lisa Yuskavage give a lecture.

I must be honest I have a regret.

I am too shy to ask questions at a lecture and I just now thought of a good one.

I was sifting through some her images for this post and I would have liked to have asked about the subject of eroticism in her work. Even the fruit seems to be painted in a lustful way.

Moving on.

You know those things that you go to and then you're like that's why I keep making things?

Well, I had one of those things this week, I went to an artist lecture given by my former Professor Nick Cave.

His way of working and his body of work are filled with ideas and hopes and they make me believe in something more important than the individual.

He has an amazing eye for combining already existing materials.

I just know I'm glad I'm not one of his assistants hooking human hair into full suits.

These pieces are stunning to look at, if you're in Brooklyn there is one at the Brooklyn museum worthy of checking out.

Where you you like to work? What time of day is most productive for you to work and why do you think that is?

I’ve made myself a makeshift “studio” in the corner of a room, fully equipped with a tiny pink desk, night table with a sewing machine on it, and supplies piled beneath. I work from home, but unfortunately home is a closet sized room in an apartment. I’ve always had trouble working in open exposed space, I like to hole up in my own little world. It’s tight, but it’s all my space, which makes me feel infinitely inspired. As for time of day, I’m an odd mix of both a morning and night person, I’m not so productive or useful mid day 2-6 so that’s when I usually run errands, go to the post office, and meet up with people, then I come back to work.

Where does your source material come from?

I do a ton of research at the library, but I always have to know what I’m looking for first. I usually research topics a bit online and put together a book list before hitting the stacks to search for images, stories and information. For collages though, I have a huge box full of patterns and things I’ve cut out of magazines and scanned out of books so that I’m always ready with a variety of textures, patterns and images to work with. It’s a continual work in progress, searching for inspiration and new materials.

What kind of images inspire you, do you keep a sketchbook?

I used to be a lot better about keeping a sketchbook but I have so much anxiety about work being permanently kept in a bound book that I usually don’t do much sketching inside. I gravitate more towards doing completed mini pieces that just happen to be inside a sketchbook. Plus, I’m a jerk and I glue together pages that I don’t like so no one can ever see them, haha. Most of my sketches for drawings I’m working on are done on loose paper or in a spiral bound “sketchbook” that I can tear out and scan from as things start coming together.

What techniques and processes are your favorite?

I like mixing a variety of processes in each piece, it’s the mix that keeps things interesting. I love working with collage elements and screenprinting, and a friend taught me how to do paper lithography pretty recently, I’m looking forward to incorporating more printing processes into my illustrations.

What is special and inspiring about living where you do ?

I live in Brooklyn right now which is so inspirational but challenging all at the same time. I like the energy, and that everything around seems to be a giant hodge podge of mismatched textures and colors, but I get frustrated with the amount of effort required to do really simple tasks. Some days are definitely more energetic than others.

What is a normal day like for you, how many hours a day/week do you get to actually focus and produce new works?

Haha, normal day. Every day is completely unique. Some days I get up and work completely normal hours freelancing in design offices, and other days I get up at dawn, do 5 or 6 hours of creating and then go to the post office, do bookkeeping, and supply runs before returning home to start on new projects. Some days I sew and make things all day, some days I do mostly administrative things like returning emails, updating the shop, packing orders etc. It’s a mix, and that’s what I love about freelancing. Every day I work really really hard for well over 8 hours, it’s pretty satisfying to see things take shape.

Who are your fav designers and artists??

Oh so many! I’m completely fascinated by people who can knit, because I definitely lack the patience.Off of etsy, I really like the sculptural pieces done by EV Day, and the architectural influenced paintings by Kristen Shiele, I think both of them deal with space in a completely unique way, and I am always eager to see new projects from each of them.

Do you go to museums? what is your favorite art related place to go (a place you feel inspired after you leave)??? is it a gallery, store, section in a museum???

I have a bit of an attention span problem with museums, everything is so clean, and quiet, I usually wander through, stop at what I like and then leave, with one big exception, I love the Museum of Natural History here in NY and the one in DC is fantastic as well. I think that’s a remnant of being a math and science kid growing up, My favorite room is the one with the giant blue whale and squid hanging in the NY one.

Where do you like to work?

I don’t have a favorite place right now, I used to love my space in the school’s textile studio but now that I’ve finished my degree I’ve been kicked out of the building. I work from home and I haven’t really quite got everything set up yet. Sometimes I still go into the Glasgow School of Art to knit in a hallway called the Hen Run. It’s got a beautiful view over the city and because it’s made entirely of windows it’s probably one of the warmest spots to be in Glasgow on those rare days when the sun is out all day.

What time of day is most productive for you to work and why do you think that is?

Hmm. Honestly? The time varies but it always directly corresponds to me avoiding some task that needs to be done in my everyday life. This is when I’m most productive, when I’m pro”craft”inating.

What materials do you use and most like to work with and where do you get them, locally? online?? if online where? etc.

I used to buy remnants and recycled yarn in bulk lots off of Ebay, which was perfect when I was just doing knitted accessories and it also helped keep my costs down. But now that I am actually making clothing, I can’t get away with remnants. There just isn’t usually ever enough to make an entire garment, let alone a size range. I have wholesale accounts with two big British companies, Rowan and Todd and Duncan and I buy yarn through them because it’s obviously cheaper than buying retail. I really like working with chunky handknit yarns. My favorites are Rowan’s Big Wool and Cocoon (a merino and mohair blend), and for machine knitting I prefer Todd and Duncan’s Lamaine (really soft lambswool). I also prowl Etsy to get special haberdashery items like massive wooden buttons and go to flea markets and vintage shops to find little trinkets to put on my knitted pendant necklaces.

Where does your source material come from ( do you do reseach at the library to get ideas etc.)

It can really be anything really. I do go to the library but only after I already have an idea in my head about what I’m looking for. I also am inspired by textures that I see outside or things I see people wearing on the street. A lot of times I see non-knit items, and am curious to how they would work as knits. That actually happened earlier today when a girl I saw wearing a very textured shearling and suede combo cropped jacket. For my current collection my inspiration came from textured paper sculptures that I’d made and then tried to recreate in knit. See photo Pant progression.

What kind of images inspire you, do you keep a sketchbook(if so can you scan/ photograph some of your favorite pages)?

I basically rip out anything I find remotely interesting and keep it either in a sketchbook or a binder. It depends on how relevant the images are to my current work, whether they go in a sketchbook or binder. I save the most appropriate images for my sketchbooks.

How long have you been working in your chosen medium? Are you trained?

On and off and then on on on since I was probably around 8. I studied knitting while doing my fashion degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and I just finished my masters in Textile Design with an emphasis in Knitwear at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. I’ve also worked and done a couple internships in the industry at Blake Standard in Chicago and Nom*D and Karen Walker , both in New Zealand.

What techniques and processes are your favorite?

I love hand knitting, I love texture, and I really love hand knitting chunky yarn to create massive texture. I try to interact and manipulate the knit fabric as much as possible while I am making it, so the texture is a part of the process, although sometimes texture does come later. I go so far as to say the whole idea of a process is my favorite part of what I do. I always seem to blindly walk into an idea that ends up taking way more time and materials than I ever imagined (The Layered Rectangle Jacket or the fringe trousers in my Etsy shop are two examples).

What is special and inspiring about living where you do?

Oh my god, I live in Scotland! Scotland has a huge knitting heritage, it’s everywhere! It’s not always the kind of knitwear I like to wear or design, but knits are inescapable here nonetheless. Just try to walk three blocks in the city center without passing a cashmere shop. Towards the end of my degree I thought I would leave Scotland but everything I need is here. Some of the biggest and best yarn mills and factories are all here. There are also may national and private organizations, shops, and community initiatives that support local independent designers.

What is a normal day like for you, how many hours a day/week do you get to actually focus and produce new works?

I have no ‘normal’ days, I was actually just moaning to a friend about how I wish I had a routine, with a set day or time where I was solely focused on producing my collection. Unfortunately I still have to work part time to pay the bills and my materials. I’m trying to get more organized, but it’s only me; I have to be the business and the creative side. If an opportunity presents itself or if paperwork needs to be done, I have to put the creative side on hold for the day. That can be very frustrating, so I try to have one day full a week where I don’t answer any calls, emails, go over any accounts, and just create. An entire day of knitting is a luxury. Don’t even ask about free time. It doesn’t exist

Do you go to museums? what is your favorite art related place to go (a place you feel inspired after you leave)??? is it a gallery, store, section in a museum???

I must admit since graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago I rarely go to museums. I do wish I had appreciated the museum more when it was available to me. My favorite place to go in Glasgow is Che Camille, a local store dedicated to independent designers and artists. It’s completely amazing and the owner just totally reeves you up with her contagious enthusiasm, I always leave feeling inspired and motivated. I also frequently go to the Glasgow School of Art, it’s a very famous, very beautiful building. Being in it makes me feel special and I can never articulate why. It just does. Instead of museums, I think I subconsciously surround myself around other makers, designers, and artists. Their motivation motivates me. It’s almost like being in a race, though not in a competitive way. Feeling the presence of the other runners around you all moving toward a similar goal pushes you forward and encourages you not to slack off or give up.

The Rachel Hoodie

What materials do you you use and most like to work with and where do you get them? I love to work with cotton jersey because is so wearable and comfortable. There's also a lot that can be done with sweatshirt fleece that few designers have done before. I'm planning to expand my line with more hooded and uniquely draped sweatshirts. Since I'm still small I buy from retail stores including Mood and Stretch World in NYC, and Fishmans and Vogue in Chicago. As my company grows I will start buy in larger quantities from mills.

What does your workspace look like? I do most of my designing from home, sample-making in my studio workshop, and all my business work from my office.

Where does your source material come from ( do you do reseach at the library to get ideas etc.) The majority of my designs are inspired by creative looks young people are wearing. I spend a lot of time in the Chicago fashion/art/music scene and love to see what the hipster art kids are wearing. I also check out www.lookbook.nu often to see what hot in streetwear around the world.

What kind of images inspire you, do you keep a sketchbook? I don't keep a continuous sketchbook. I do most of my sketching as I'm designing the collection. Many of my images come from blogs and I store all the files digitally.

Can you photograph one of your early works. Above is my favorite collection from my senior year at SAIC. It was inspired by victims of and art addressing domestic violence. The collection was very successful and I now sell a ready-to-wear sweatshirt (the Speak Out Hoodie) that is inspired by the same theme. (As seen below)

What techniques and processes are your favorite? I love draping and knotting jersey. The best way to design is right one the form rather than through flat patterns.

What is special and inspiring about living where you do ? I grew up in North Dakota but I've always been a city girl. I moved to Chicago in 2003 and love it here. Chicago has so many interesting people and places to go. Plus I really believe there is a lot of untapped opportunity in Chicago for young business owners.

What is a normal day like for you, how many hours a day/week do you get to actually focus and produce new works? Every day is different for me depending on what needs to be done that day. It can be anything from production to designing, to finances, to fashion shows. I'm now realizing that having your own fashion line requires less actual designing and much more business, marketing, and planning.

Who are your favorite designers? Honestly I don't study many other designers. If I had to choose I'd say Marc Jacobs and Vivienne Westwood for different reasons.

After attending SAIC I was pretty bored with the Art Institute but now I'm re-inspired by the new Modern Wing. Reminds me of what I thought would be my senior collection but way better, based on sports shapes with emphasis on shoulders and shorts, I was ahead of my time but this A. Wang I want to wear.

Greetings cyber friends, for the last two weeks I have been a busy little bee. I am newly a freelancer, or what I like to refer to as a hustler.

I have a great freelance gig in the meatpacking district as an assistant fashion designer(cut and sew mostly) with some wonderful ladies and one man.

Also, have somehow managed to trick someone into thinking I am a patternmaker and seamstress. A feat I never thought I could/would accomplish. I just never had the confidence in my skills to man up to making things for someone else, I always found the idea overwhelming.

Now having found the courage I patterned and made 2 muslins and the first sample in real fabric for a size 6.

Below is a sneak peak at the straps.

I am excited about this new accomplishment because it means my college education wasn't a complete waste, and I think the first sample looks pretty darn amazing!

Plus, I met the lovely designer on the streets of midtown when she liked my skirt and wanted a pic, I said ok but dont rip me off it's my design...a very nyc tale...

Back to sewing, I have to start cutting the second real fabric sample...I need to finish it today.

Take a minute and read the following interview from Willywaw, the etsy artist responsible for what I believe are the summer's best totes! I love the prints and the colors! Not only does she make and print these totes she also is an illustrator:

My friends call me Ash, short for Ashley, though I’ve been called Carrot-top and numerous other

nicknames bestowed upon me by my Mum. I live in Narragansett, Rhode Island with my

husband, Joe, and our dog, Cody, a rescued Alaskan husky mix. Our little house is on a salt

marsh river just a short paddle to the sea and my studio takes over any spare bit of space I can

find inside or out.

I was a studio art major in college and for a time designed clothing and outdoor gear before working as a freelance illustrator for the past fifteen years or so. I started screen-printing my own designs last spring with a desire to have more control over my work and the freedom to create what and when I wanted. My design studio is called Willywaw, named after the ferocious arctic winds that sweep down coastal mountains and blow onto the ocean.

Nature and wild places inspire me the most but I'm influenced by colors and shapes as well. I relish pouring over books and magazines, getting ideas from unlikely places. I have a small library of field guide books that I treasure. My sketchbook is more of a collection of loose paper with drawings and notes kept in piles. Since I scan most of my sketches to work on the computer it is easier to keep them that way. I like working in a variety of mediums from oils to watercolor but screen-printing is fun because combines art and design and I am able to create functional pieces for people to use and enjoy. I enjoy figuring out and drafting patterns as well. I mostly print on organic cotton canvas and hemp for my totes, pillows and tea towels, use t-shirts dyed in Vermont, and post-consumer recycled paper for my note cards. Currently I am enamored with Fabriano Medioevalis paper made in Italy and am printing greeting cards on the stock. My fabric comes from NearSea Naturals, Sew Eco-Logical and Hemp Traders and I do most of my sourcing online.

A typical workday for me begins about 5 am. I’m up with the sun and the birds, Cody wanting breakfast, and Joe leaving for work (he’s a ship builder). Rarely are two days ever the same but I check email and fill orders, some times sew a bit before Cody’s walk and second breakfast. I definitely like working early, it’s quiet and I can concentrate with a clear head. I have a small room for an office and spread out all over our house during the day. We definitely ran out of room a few years ago and are close to needing a large, separate studio but I love working from home despite the lack of space. I tackle the biggest project mid-morning around 9 am whether is printing or working on new designs. After lunch I’m more at ease to sew, cut, heat-set ink, or burn screens. Sewing is by far the most time consuming. I never have enough time to work on new designs and since joining Etsy I seem to be online much more than I expected. In the evening I ponder new ideas, sketch and work on “the list” which is everything to do for the next day. Some days I take off to paint outside, work in the garden or on our little house. My summer project is to build a shed with sleeping loft and trap door for my nephews.

We still have plenty of time to spend at the beach, surfing or kayaking. Joe’s passion for the ocean, diving, and underwater photography is a huge influence in my current work. We snorkel at the mouth of the river and dig for Quahogs, gather shells from the rolling surf and find mermaid’s purses among the seaweed. We are greeted by nesting Ospreys in the spring and watch the Plovers and Least Terns tend their chicks in mid-summer. There's lots of swimming and surfing and picnics and scooting about in our little boat, Squid. By fall the beach turns quiet again and the crowds have gone home, the water is still warm and the colors on the marsh start to change to burnt orange and raw umber. Winter is the hardest time for me because I miss being in the mountains. We both love to telemark ski and mountain bike and I spent several great years living in Utah and Idaho before coming back east.

Etsy has been an incredible outlet for my work. I've found that the more I put into it the more I get out. I've met and sold to people all over the world and have been able to create a nice little business for myself with a lot of potential. I sell at a local organic farmer's market as well in the summer and by word of mouth and for now that is keeping me very, very busy and quite happy.

I'm pleased to announce I have finally caught a job(fish), and not just any fish, the fish I wanted. I'm still adjusting, having just finished the second week of this new job I'm excited to be excited about fashion again.

Also the women I work with are clothes horses in the best sense of the word, heels everyday(almost), LOVE IT. They are however bad influences I want to always dress up too now and the hours are long so I've been doing a wee bit of spending....

I am awaiting a pair of the shoes below and am lusting the A. Wang skirt below... I used to be a hater but his line is kinda what I want to wear right now....

I think I had the most positive show experience this weekend meeting the most amazing booth-mate and customers.

There were over 200 vendors at McCarren Park this weekend and many many jewelers. I was very lucky to have many sales which to me means these people chose to buy my work over the person not only next to me but across from me as well as all around the park.

It's a really great feeling to have such positive feedback about my work after working on it for the last 3 months pretty isolated in my studio.

I have treated myself to a nice bag finally.

I worked 2 years at a corporate job and decided I had nothing superficial to show for it, and now was the time to change that. I originally wanted a Foley and Corrina bag that was $425 and decided instead to support a local(ish) small, independent designer(such as myself) whose handmade gorgeous leather bags run about half the price(some) of that $425.

I am in LOVE with my new gorgeous soft as baby bottom leather bag and thought I'd share my new secret(ish) desire to collect this designer's bags.

Good Afternoon. It's so beautiful out today I'm a little sad I have to stay indoors and make jewelry but that's life the week before a big show.

I did try to go running this morning, given that I can't run I think (hopefully) a bike is in order... we shall see.

I have just returned to New York from Barcelona. I was there one glorious week and due to a computer malfunction I lost all my pics except from the last day of my trip, photos lost include me on my bike from my awful awful bike tour the beach, pics from many museums of objects I will now forget, and the beach, almost all proof I ever left is gone and now I'm sad!

Recently I am VERY into triangles and I thought I might share a page from my fashion sketchbook as one source for why triangles are radical.

Triangles, like, whoa!

Below are pictured two hollow handmade sterling silver triangles which were destined to be earrings for me to wear to my Saturday evening activities, well, friends, my plans went kaboom literally when I was soldering the earring post to one of the triangles the triangle literally burst (...hot air expands...blah, blah, blah). You can see where it burst in the picture below the triangle on the right.

So, future hollow triangle studs I plan to make( hopefully this week) will have to have a drillhole on the back...

Lesson for all you folks(mostly me) is to wear safety goggles during all metal working activities and also to not solder anything onto a hollow form IT WILL BURST unless there is an air hole...

So the short of it is I'm almost done with the class I'm taking and I'm excited to say I am finally 2 weeks before my last class working the way and what I wanted to work on in the first place.

Below is my test print and a very thin silk cotton blend. I hope to turn a piece of this into a top before I leave for BCN on May 11... wish me luck... lots of things to work on limited amounts of time.
